Comments: I am searching the ancestry of my father: Ernest Pacheco Medeiros, born on Sao Miguel ( I believe in the village of Povoacao) on Oct.10.1902, he passed away on Oct.14, 1992. My grandfather, Mariano Pacheco de Medeiros, was born in the year 1866 (I believe on the island of Sao Miguel) and passed on in the year 1912. My grandmother, Mary de Conceicao Pacheco, was born in Brazil(town unknown at this time) in the year 1875 and passed on in the year 1957,(I believe) in the village of Povoacao. They raised a family, one girl & six boys listed as follows, Mary Pacheco Medeiros, born 1896, Julio Pacheco Medeiros, born 1898, Ernest Pacheco Medeiros,(father) born Oct.10.1902, Mariano Pacheco Medeiros, born 1904, Francisco Pacheco Medeiros, born 1906, Joseph Pacheco Medeiros, born 1908, Fernando Pacheco Medeiros, born 1910. The three oldest, migrated to the USA. My aunt Mary & Dad migrated to New Beford, Massachusetts. My uncle Julio migrated to Ohio, USA. I believe one of my uncle"s migrated to Brazil, (town unknown). The remaining uncle's, I believe lived in Povoacao. Uncle Francisco worked for the goverment, (I believe in the village of Povoacao). There is a very good possibility that I have cousin's that reside in the village of Povoacao. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Village: Castelo Branco, and Feteira Faial
Surnames: duarte or dutra silvera, andrade, garcia
Comments: Duarte emigrated through Ellis Island Duarte/Dutra was a twin and one went to Brazil (married instantly and went), the other went to Warm Springs/Milpitas. Every last relative I have from Faial (cep for this one Brazil - the one I want to find) went to this area (lots of 'em). Dutra married Silvera and had at least 8 children most all in the Warm Springs/Milpitas area. Perhaps the names were Anne Duarte and Joseph Silvera that married. Andrade and Garcia also married don't have first names.

City: Horta, Nossa Senora das Angustias: Correia, Silva, Sousa, Avila
Comments: Manuel Correia da Silva, my grandfather was born Dec. 5 1863 and was baptised February 9, 1864 at N.S. das Angustias Church in Horta. His father was Antonio Correia da Silva, his mother Rita Leonor... His father's parents were Francisco Correia da Silva and Rosa Joaquina... His mother's parents were Manuel de Sousa Avila and Clara Marianna... Family lore has my grandfather emigrating to the US as a young teenager after receiving a modest inheritance. He may have paid for passage, worked as ship's crew or been a stowaway. He married Rose Mathews in 1879 (at age 16!) and had one son, Edward. They were divorced and he married my grandmother, Mary Ann Rogers, in 1888. He lived out his life in Brockton, MA and worked as a barber. He died in June 1933. His family name was Anglicized to Corayer. Lore also has it that Manuel had a brother Antonio who emigrated to Brazil.

For comments, questions, or to submit your own surnames and locations, send e-mail to: . Make the subject "Masterlist" and include the same kind of information you see in the above entries: Your name & address, Telephone no., Email address, Surnames in one village (in alphabetical order), Comments you wish to add. If you have more than one village, submit the same things for each and every village. If you have surnames from various lugares within the same parish, send one submission and group the names into the various lugares.

Religious "surnames" (like "de Jesus, da Conceição, do Espirito Santo, etc.") of women are usually not accepted since they're of no genealogical value, except in cases where these names are used by males. Refer to my series of articles on "Portuguese Naming Traditions" on this website.
