Comments: Little is known about these families. My grandmother, Belmira Viverios Enos of Georgiaville,
RI does not remember much about this family. They lived in Fall River, MA. Then Manville, RI and later
settled in Georgiaville, RI. Manuel Enos was formerly named Manuel Inacia, it could be Ignacio. When he
came to this country, the family was encouraged by the schoolteacher to change the last name because it
was too hard to pronounce and it was changed to Enos. Manuel married Mary Machado and immigrated to the
US with sons Joe and Morris around 1919? Can anyone help with these names. Any idea what village, I was
told the island was São Miguel.

Comments: Seeking information on the second wife of Thomas Hickling, first
vice-consul to the Azores, based in St. Michaels, who was my great, great, great
grandfather. His family was American, from Boston, and his first wife was Sarah
Green of Boston. His second wife was thought to be Sarah Faulder, daughter of a
Philadelphia sea captain of that name. I've been unable to find any record of
the name "Faulder." Samuel Eliot Morison, historian, says Hickling's
second wife from "an old Portuguese family," but he does not give the
name of the family. There is evidence that Sarah couldn't speak English; and
some of her 16 children married Portuguese people and had families with
Portuguese names. I live in Fall River, probably very close to cousins I do not
know. Would appreciate any information on Portuguese Hickling descendants

He was settled in Povo Novo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Then he went to Herval
do Sul (this is where my parents were born). He came with his wife (whose name I
do not have) and at least with a daughter called Rosa Medeiros. José Inácio de
Medeiros was the father of many children. Three of them - José Inácio de
Medeiros, Sebastião Inácio de Medeiros e Zeferino Inácio de Medeiros - are
the most prominent. I happen to know people who descend from the three of them.
My father is the great-grandson of Zeferino. I would like to get information
about the arrival of José Inácio de Medeiros in Brail, the ship that brought
him and his ancestors. A site from Passos, Minas Gerais, Brazil, about the
Medeiros family tells us that at this time three brothers came from the Azores
in the same ship. One of them went to the state of Rio Grande do Norte, another
one went to the state of Minas Gerais and yet another one went to the state of
Rio Grande do Sul.

Comments: I don't know which village my grandfather was born in, but he is from
Sao Miguel. They came over around the turn of the century, 1899-1904? Our last
name then was spelled CAETANO. My grandfather and great-grandfather were Manuel
Jr. and Manuel Sr., with no middle name. Manuel Sr's father was supposidely
called Jack. Manuel Sr's was married to Ermalinda Angel. Manuel Jr was born June
21, 1897 and was about 5 years old when they came over. If anyone can add some
information, I and a number of relatives would greatly appreciate it.

Comments: Through my father's military records, which I just acquired, I found a
cousin in Bridgewater. Mass. And in turn have learned a great deal about the
paternal side of my family. My father died about 20 years ago and I just didn't
pay attention to the history of his parents and thier immigration to the U.S.
from San Miguel, Azores. Now I am sorry and am trying to find out all the
information I can to pass down to my daughter. Here is the information I already
have through my cousin Joseph, whom I have not met in person yet, we have
exchanged letters(he does not have a computer) and we have spoken on the phone.
My grandparents were born in the village of St. Michael on San Miguel Island in
the Azores. In and around 1877. My grandfather's first name was William, born on
April 10, 1877. My grandmother's maiden name was Sousa or Souza. Also born in
St. Michael. They immigrated to America on the Penninsular out of the port of
Pontu Del Garda, Azores. They arrived at Ellis Island on Sept. 6, 1901. They
lived in Bridgewater, Mass. up till 1929 or 1930, they had owned a grocery store
and lost it in the depression and then moved to California for jobs. My
grandfather built a house on Crapo St in Bridgewater and had 7 sons and 1
daughter: Their names were: Alfred, Joseph, Frank, John, George, William,
Lewis(my father) and Mary Starr. If anyone has information on my family or their
decendants or ancestry, please notify me through my email.

in São Miguel by the end of the 19th century. He was a "luthier",i.e.
he made "guitarras, violões, cavaquinhos " and the like. He was my
husband's Oswaldo Roberto Pacheco Campiglia maternal great grandfather. His son
Joaquim Medeiros Pacheco came to São Paulo, Brazil around the turn of the
century (20th century!) where he married twice to Italian-origin young ladies,
namely: Elisa Angela...(can't tell her maiden name) and Adelaide Toschi. Joaquim
had six daughters the eldest being, Elisa Pacheco Campiglia, my mother-in-law,
still alive -age 91- but now very sick. Back to Manuel Pacheco Medeiros, he was
called by the nickname of "Sr. Medeirinhos",and I would like to know
wether he lived at Ponta Delgada, as well as know wether we still have any
living relatives in São Miguel. Thanks in advance.

Comments: I know very little about my ancesters but would be very interested to
know more. My great grandfather Manuel Medeiros (?) was born on Sao Miguel
around the year 1900. He immigrated to the United States with his family (mother, father, one?
brother Joesph?) in 1904/1905 via Ellis Island. The family checked in at
Immigrations by the name Soarse. Acording to family legend this is because
Manuel's father(name unknown) was wanted for the murder of his mistress's
husband. I am not sure how factual this information is. The name Soarse was
naturalized to Souza and the family settled on Cape Cod. Manuel maried Isabell
Thomas on or about 1921. Isabell was then 15 years old. She was the daughter of
Portugues immigrants, possibly also from Sao Miguel. Isabell and Manuel lived in
West Barnstable and raised their children, Louis, Eddie, Edmund, Doris,Irene,
Arlene, Josie, Alfred, Connie. If anyone has any information, or can point me in
the right direction it would be greatly apriciated.

Comments: I'm trying to gather information on my grandmother who was from
Portugal. I was told St. Charles, but I'm not sure of that. Her given name at
birth was Amelia Freitas Pasquale. She changed her name when she came to the

Pasquale, and Doris Pasquale. I believe most of her sisters are deceased. My
granny was born on June 11, 1900 and died on December 7, 1989 in Bessmer
Alabama. She moved from California after her oldest daughter Mary died to live
with her youngest daughter Rosie. My granny died from a broken heart when my
daddy died, he was her only son and the baby of the family. I had to lie to her
until they found him. He was murdered on her birthday and missing. I had to hide
it from her. She knew something was wrong when he did'nt call like he'd done for
years before. So if there is anyone with information our family is trying to

Comments: I am looking for any information about my Portuguese descendants. My
mother, now deceased was born in Oakland, CA to Maria Adelina and Gervais Telles.
My grandfather was also known as Jerry Telles or Tels and worked for the
Southern Pacific Railroad. He died at a young age. I am looking for information
on his family. All I know is that his family is from San Miguel but that his
family first emigrated to Brazil. He came to California from Brazil. My
grandmother came here with her mother and at least one sibling. I do not know
what year they came here or on what ship. I have been told by a cousin that they
came in through Rhode Island and I know it had to be prior to 1908 (probably
several years) because my mother was born that year in Oakland CA. Maria
Adelina's maiden name was Moniz, or Moneze or Monez. Her little brother was
Henry Moniz. My grandmother's maiden name was Tavares. They came from a town
called Raab de Peixe (Spelling may be incorrect, but it supposedly means tail of
the fish). Other Moniz, or Monez relatives arriving from San Miguel, were Cornel
and Giles (pronounced Jill), and sister, Carolina. Thanks to anyone out there
who may have information regarding any of the above.

Comments: My father was Edward Alves Farias [Fall River, Mass] [died 1992]. His
mother was Angela Amaral Farias[died 1988] [that is how it is written on her SS
application, however, she went by the maiden name "Moniz" [she
remarried and became Angela Farias Pacheco]. Her mother was Rose Emily Rebello
[from Sao Miguel the Azores]. Her father was Manuel Moniz Amaral [that's how she
wrote it on her SS application] [from Sao Miguel the Azores]. My dads father was
Manuel Alves Farias [died 1960]. His grandfather was Manuel Alves Farias. His
grandmother was Antonia Aguiar both from Sao Miguel, Azores. I am having some
problems with the names, everyone says the maiden was Moniz, but she wrote it
differently on her Social Security Application in 1940. The application says to
married women to write your maiden name as your middle. So, my grandmother wrote
Angela Amaral Farias - however her Obit says her maiden was Moniz. My greatAunt
whom I have recently located claims that the name Moniz was used by her father
[my grandfather] and his brother. My great uncle used the name Amaral, because
he didn't want to use Moniz - it would be difficult trace them back to the
Azores unless I knew for sure the true surname, Moniz? or Amaral?

but both tragically died when my grandfather was a very young age (1 year old
when his father died and 6 when his mother died). It would be wonderful to have
more information. My Grandfather's father was Frank Morris. According to some
family history, his name might have been Mauricio before coming to the U.S. He
came to New Bedford, Massachusetts around 1890. He was born between 1869 - 1873.
My Grandfather's mother, Maria C. Martin came to New Bedford, Massachusetts in
1900. She was born between 1883 - 1884. Frank and Maria were married in New
Bedford in September 1900. They had 5 children, 4 who survived: Mary Angel born
in 1901 who supposedly married Paul Amado from Lisbon and lived in Rio de Janiro
and Portugal. My Grandfather used to write her regularly. They had three sons:
Frank, born in 1902; Manuel Joseph, born in 1907; and Antone Morris, born in
1912. They had another daughter, Regina, born 1910/11 who died when a baby. Both
Frank and Maria once in the United States worked in the textile mills. Frank
died of TB in 1913 and Maria in the flu epidemic in 1918. Maria's brother Manuel
eventually took in the kids after Maria died, but they did have to spend time in
a St. Joseph's orphanage until they were old enough to work so they could help
out the family. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Azores c.1874 (I have this spelling on her son’s marriage certificate). I
think she married someone called Fernandez (or Fernandy) and had 8 children of
which 6 survived. They were born in Hawaii and California (Georgina, William,
Adeline, Winfred, Jolinda – 1910 Hawaii census, Hilo Town) and she had a
lodger, David Hurst, who was French Canadian. It appears that Jessie was widowed
from Mr Fernandez and married David Hurst, as his name was passed down via
William, my great grandfather. David and Jessie emigrated to the US (she was
nationalised in 1880, he in 1894) and in 1919 lived in Berkeley, California.
William went into the merchant navy where he met my great grandmother in
Scotland, UK, and had a daughter, Elizabeth. William returned to the US on his

Jessie lived in San Francisco with her nephew and neice, Laura Howard in 1930.

Comments: Antone Roque is my Great Grandfather who married my Great Grandmother in December of 1906. He does not appear in the 1910 Census at the same address as my Great Grandmother. He presumably went back to Sao Miguel.
For comments, questions, or to submit your own surnames and locations, send an email to: Masterlist @ dholmes.com Make the subject "Masterlist" and include the same kind of information you see in the above entries: Your name and address, telephone no., email address, surnames in one village (in alphabetical order), comments you wish to add. If you have more than one place, submit the same things for each and every place. If you have surnames from various lugares within the same parish, send one submission and group the names into the various lugares.
Religious "surnames" (like "de Jesus, da Conceição, do Espirito Santo, etc.") of women are usually not accepted since they're of no genealogical value, except in cases where these names are used by males. Refer to my series of articles on "Portuguese Naming Traditions" on this website.
Read some stories about emigrants from São Miguel.
