Date submitted: Sat, 23 Sep 2000
Village: Monte Lajes Flores, Azores
Surname: Estacio (first name - Jose Francisco)
Comments: The only thing I know about this maternal Uncle is that he was very old and poor when he sent me a letter in 1972. My Mother's name was Marie Jose Estacio and she immigrated around 1920. She lived in San Francisco and came with her father. She lost track of him and moved to Southern California around 1923. Her brother wrote a letter to her in 1964 and that is where I got the uncle's address. I hope this info is of some use to you. I would really appreciate any help you can give me. I do not speak Portuguese, but may be able to have a letter translated. Thank you.

Email: indigo2@slingshot.co.nz
Date submitted: Fri, 4 Oct 2002
Comments: I am searching for information about my great-great-grandfather Francis Joseph, born in Faja Grande, Flores we believe, circa 1835. A Certificate of Service as a Master Mariner in N.Z. gives his DOB as 1/2/1835 and birthplace as Fergangran, Western Islands. However, age from marriage cert. has him born 1840, and death cert. age has him born in 1833. He married here in Auckland in 1862, then went to the Nevada goldfields with his young wife and first born daughter. From letters written by his wife back to N.Z. we deduce that several brothers and 2 sisters were also in California. He had 2 further daughters born in Nevada. A 4th child E. Joseph was born in 1870, but sadly his wife Georgina died in childbirth, being buried at Gold Hill Cemetry 11/12/1870. The baby also died 3 months later, buried with its mother 20/3/1871. Frank Joseph returned to Auckland about 1872, remarried here and settled here until his death in 1901. I did wonder whether Joseph was perhaps not his Portugese surname, but I have found the same name in 2 passenger lists (Azores to Boston). Certainly there must be quite a few family in California. Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards Jeanette Gilbert

Comments: I now know that my grandparents and great grandparents came form the Azores. My Great Grandparents and Grand father came from Fajazinha, Flores. My Grandmother from Faja Grande, Flores. I am not sure when my Great grandfather came to the US it was around 1878 to 1880 early. His wife and Daughter (my Grandmother) did not come over for about 8-10 years later. My Grandfather I am not sure when he came (he was the brother to my Great Grandfather) He and my Grandmother were married in Sacramento I believe in the court by a judge. Not in the Catholic church?? This is what I have found and with the help of others I am sure the road would have been much longer. I am still on the search for the stories that I just can't remember, from when we would visit with relatives. Thank you

Angela Edwards Langstrom, (no address submitted)
Email: "Angie Langstrom" <coachangie@att.net>
Date submitted: 20 Feb 2010
Surnames: Edwards, Furtado, Fagundes, Silveira
Comments: My father is Howard Fred Edwards (DOB February 1930, Merced, CA). My Paternal Grandparents are: Joseph Edwards(?--I do not believe that was his given surname) & Evelyn Furtado Edwards of Merced, CA.  Joseph was married before (to Anne(?) ) and his mother in law was named Elizabeth (this could be reversed?).  Following his first wife's death he and his mother-in-law and three children (Yvonne [may not be Joseph's biological child], Genevieve, and Joseph) left Flores and moved to Merced, CA. Joseph had at least one sister named Alma. I know Evelyn Furtado (DOB November 1901) is from Faja Grande and comes from a large family some of whom now live in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.  She had at least one sister who's name was Esther. She also has a nephew, Jaime, who was/is a priest in Faja Grande. Evelyn married Joseph and moved him and their 2 children (their first son Earl (Ed) and my father) to Berkeley, CA in the early 1930's. I believe some of the other maternal (Evelyn) family surnames may be Fagundes and Silveira. Any help would be great! I have heard that there were quite a few Jewish families who fled from the Portugal and Spain mainlands to the Azores during the reformation and I am very interested to pursue this. Thank you!

Comments: Corvello originally spelled with double "l" until about 1900. Branches of the family which immigrated to the U.S. before 1900 retained the old spelling. The Corvello family reportedly came to Flores from Santa Maria in the early 1700's.

Comments: Have traced DeFreytas/deFreitas surname back to ca. 1720s in Fajãzinha village. 'Serpa' name, WITH deFreitas name from 1761 back to about 1680 in direct-line research. Have record of Joam Serpa m. to Maria Valadam (also spelled 'Valadão') 26 Apr 1705, which is earliest direct-line record found. Comments: My great grandparents were all from Lomba, Flores. The surnames I have are Freitas and Da Santos. My great grandmother on my grandmother's side was born 3/29/70. She came to Modesto and married John J Freitas of Castroville. I would like to find her maiden name which seems to be lost the surviving members of our immediate family. There is just not much known about her before she came to Calif. My grandfather's parents were Marianna da Santos and John C George. I am assuming that the name George is a change from the oringinal. I do not know if he was from Lomba or not. He lived in Modesto. If you can enlighten me on any of the missing facts it would be appreciated. Or please point me in the right direction.
My great grandparents George were dairy farmers and also owned considerable property in what used to be downtown Modesto. From what I understand my great-grandmother Marianna was a very smart, strong woman and basically ran the business. In my family when any of the women are extremely independent and head strong about doing their thing and taking care of themselves we just say it is the George genes taking over. Thanks

Comments: My husband's great-grandmother, Catherine, was born 1866 in Lomba, daughter of Antonio Pimentel Silveira and Anna Joaquina. Anna was the daughter of João P. Mattheus Vierra and Maria Vasconcelos. Catherine came to the US in 1885, and married Joseph Enos (see under Azores or Madeira) around 1886. They lived in the Taunton-Rehoboth, MA area and had six children. She married second, in 1901, Antone Perry, and third, L.G. Berdrow. She died in Kernsville, CA, in 1945. Her children were Mae (Mary Emilia), Louis, Kay (Catherine Magdalene), and Joseph F., plus two who died young. She worked as a laundress and midwife.

Comments: My husband Peter is related to the Joseph family who were living in the Greymouth area, Westland, New Zealand from the late 1800’s. His great-grandmother was Jessie Eleanor (Lena) Joseph, born 10 Aug 1881, Greymouth, who was the sixth child of eight children of Antonio Jose De Freitas and Isabella Gascoyne who were married in Auckland, New Zealand 7 January 1864. We believe Antonio Joseph/DeFreitas was born about 1837, Ilha Das Flores, Horta, Portugal, and arrived in New Zealand c. 1858, after jumping ship, so the story goes. He applied for Naturalisation 5 Feb 1863 granted 13 Feb 1863. He apparently Anglicised his name to Joseph, which has caused much confusion for family research. Antonio's parents may have been Antonio Freitas and Mariana Furtado/Fortado who were married 1834 Flores, Azores, Portugal but we have no real proof. My husband was told of his Portuguese background but never new about the De Freitas name until contacted by some other Joseph family members. If any one can help us with our link back to Portugal and family connections and information, it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
