DeFrates and his mother's name was Francis A. Serpa. My grandfather was born in Martha's vineyard here in the US, but as far as I know his parents were not born in the US. My father, Edward Emmett DeFrates, is still living, but for some reason unknown to my siblings and me he will not give us any information on his family other than they originally came from the Azores. I hope someone can help me in my search. I know there are a few other DeFrates in the US, but I'm not sure if were are related.

Comments: I have just recently begun my geneological search and I ran across your internet site. Maybe someone out there will have "clues" that can help me along the way.
I am trying to trace the origins and geneology of my great grandfather. His name was Francisco Cardoza, although in the past, there was also reference to his name as Francisco Cardoza Silveira or Francisco Silveira Cardoza. He sailed for the U.S., and landed in California sometime around 1883, although this is only an estimate. He later sent for his fiance (who, by the way, was his second cousin) and they were then married in California. Her name was Rosa (don't have a last name). They had at least one child: his name was Frank Peter Cardoza (born in Oakland? around 1908 and died in Vallejo in 1947). Frank Peter Cardoza married Hazel Brown and they had two sons: Laurence Cardoza (my father), and Donald Cardoza. Any suggestions on how I can proceed would be appreciated. Thank you. Diane Rojas

Comments: I have recently found out that I had a GG Grandfather who was Portugese. Apparently, from the Azores. His name was Francis JOSEPH, b1829 died N.Z ?. I believe he was a Whaler and jumped ship in New Zealand. He married an English woman Elizabeth Unthank HAYNES in New Plymouth, New Zealand. I would be interested in contacting any family in AZORES of this man. Thanks.
2012 Update: The name he used in New Zealand having anglicised it was;  Francis Joseph, born 1833 in Azores, son of Antonio (a carpenter), Mother’s name not listed.  He died in August 1917,  aged 84 years old in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand.  He married an English woman Elizabeth Unthank Haynes in New Plymouth when he was 50 years old.  They had 3 children.  The story was that he was a whaler and jumped ship.  Although he lived here since 1864, he never became a naturalised NZer.  Several years ago, someone apparently from the USA , came looking for him.

But the surprise was he changed his name we found name change records for both he and his wife. John Marie Smith was born we believe John Marie Ferreira. Or that was his father who is listed as Gukin Ferreira born 1821. John Smith Married my great-great grandmother Lucy Enos Frates who also changed that maiden name to Lucy Enos Fancis. I have no idea why she would change a maiden name but she was born in 1848 all that is listed for any of this info. is Azores. There was a story in the Newspaper here about a Statue being made for her safe travel and the building of a famous church there and it delayed her travels until both the church and statue where finished. There is much more detail about this marriage. Anyway I am searching for anyone who has info. on these names. Gukin Ferreira born 1821 wife may have been Rita? Lucy Enos Frates Born 1848 her parents were Enos Frates (Francis) and Francis no birth dates for them but you could estimate about...1810-1830?. thanks...

Comments: I've just recently started tracking my geneology. Here are the specific names and information I've gotten from one of my uncles in Colorado: Dinatos Mattos was born January 23, 1915 in Fall River Mass. (Notice Mattas was spelled with an "O".) to Maria Nunes and Manuel Mattos. Both Maria & Manuel was born in the Azores, (according to the birth certificate). Also, a Portuguese friend of mine told me that Mattos my have ben spelled Matos, which is a very common Portuguese name, like Jones in the US. Dinatos Mattas had two brothers and two sisters. Their names were Louis, John, Hilda, and Irene. My Great Grandfather died of a heart attack April 10, 1936 (Manuel Mattos). His father was Albert Mattos and his mother was Lauisa Rapoza, both born in the Azores.

Island/village: unknown
Comments: My grandmother, MARIA LUISA CORDERO was b. approx. 1870-1890, place unknown. Her parents, it is said were portuguese from the Azores. I don't have nor does any one know what their names were or birth dates were. We have no other information on my grandmother. MARIA LUISA CORDERO may have migrated to Mexico, where she met and married: Frank (Francisco) Elias, approx. 1900-1911. They lived in California. They had two children, Frank Cordero Elias b. 1911 in California, and Demesia b. 1912-1915 probably in Mexico. They settled in Tucson, Arizona. No one knows what happened or where MARIA LUISA died. The story is, that she went back to the Azores and maybe died there in the 40's. This is all I have on MARIA LUISA CORDERO ELIAS. I'm hoping to find something on her somewhere and complete my research on her. Thank you.

Family name: d'Oliveira
Comments: I am endeavouring to trace my direct line of ancestry and would be delighted if you are able to guide me. My earliest starting point is Captain Manuel Joas d'Oliveira, born 1756, who was in command of the vessel: 'St.Josef' or possibly spelt ' Joseph', which ran aground in Table Bay, at the Cape of Good Hope in 1793. Is there any way of finding information about his roots? On 11th May 1795 he married Gezina van Blerk who was of Netherlands ancestry. She was the daughter of Niklaas van Blerk of Venlo, Netherlands and Katerina van Blerk, who came from Nijmegan. Her mother had the surname Magetsky. Captain d'Oliveira died at the Cape of Good Hope on 11th May, 1795. Thanking you

Comments: All I know is that Jose/Joseph DeSilver came from Portugal, no village added. His birth was 19 January 1829, died West Yarmouth, MA, 19 March 1898. He married Amanda Robinson 19 Oct 1854, in South Dennis, MA (All of these towns are on Cape Cod.) He was in the Civil War, but only Portugal on it for birthplace. His Civil War papers had information from affidafits from people that knew him (to get a pension). One said he knew him since "he was a boy of 15". He is listed as a Master Mariner. Perhaps he jumped ship. I cannot find anything about him. New Bedford records don't go back that far. Amanda and their son, Joseph, Jr. died within days of each other, and had a double funeral. My father's mother also died when he was 10 and he was adopted and name changed. Out of 5 children, my father was the only one adopted. I don't know who brought up the other children.

As was common he and his wife (maybe from France herself or her ancestors?) joined their family names. One was Bettencourt and the other Mattos. What I have been told was that they settled on Mattos upon moving to California. Bettencourt became my grandfather’s middle name (Joseph Bettencourt Mattos, born and grew up in California: Gustine and Napa). I do not know how many children my great-grandparents had, but my grandfather Joseph and his wife Ruth Gray had two sons (Edward Bettencourt Mattos and Alfred Leroy Mattos (my father, born in 1923)). Comments: were looking for any leads that can help solve the mystery we have all we believe is. Innez Parrez a 13yo boy from Portugal was rescued by Joseph Hodgson in the Hauraki Gulf Auckland "Innez" as he gave his name told of the miss treatment aboard a ship from the captain and crew. He and another boy jumped ship but the other boy drowned. This was in the 1850`s (no official date). His English was very poor so when he was not needed to work on the farm on Waiheke he sat in on the school lessons with the Hodgsons 10 children. He married 1861 (his name now written as Innes Parris) * we have a copy of this marriage certificate which he has signed and his age is stated as 21* it may be nothing but he named one of his sons Dolphe or Adolphus seems to stand out whether this may be an indication to someone we don't know. Dolphe (Adolphus) Parris - B 1879. Details on death Certificate are: Name as "Innes parris", he died on 08 December 1924, Born - Unknown Age - 87, Parents Unknown, age married - 23, length in New Zealand 70 Years. We don't know where to start finding information on this young lad.

Island: Faial and unknown
Comments: I am searching for information about my ancestors from the Azores. My great great grandfather was Jose Da Silveira born October 5, 1858 at Flamengos, Faial, Azores. It is my understanding he served as the mayor of Horta, Faial and was on the board of directors of the Santa Casa da Misercodia hospital. He immigrated to the US in 1892 and changed his surname to Chrysostomo. He had five children and I only know the names of four: Antonio, Mary, Helen, and Joseph (my great grandfather). My assumption is that their names first names were Americanized when they arrived in the US. His daughter Helen was the first Portuguese mayor in the US and first female mayor of San Leandro, CA. I do not know his parents names or the surname of his wife Maria (changed to Mary) who was born October 18, 1850 on Faial, I believe.
Another great, great grandfather was born about 1829 in the Azores. I am uncertain which island. We believe his name was Francisco de Cuhna, but we have been unable to confirm that. He changed his name to Frank Calhoun when he arrived in the US. He died in 1900 and is buried in Hayward, CA. My grandfather told me he worked on a whaling ship and jumped ship and swam ashore in the San Francisco area. He was married to Loriana also from the Azores. Loriana was born in 1839 and died in 1899. We believe her surname was Enos, but again, we have been unable to confirm her name was Loriana Enos.
I would appreciate any information or leads to additional information that anyone can provide.

Religious "surnames" (like "de Jesus, da Conceição, do Espirito Santo, etc.") of women are usually not accepted since they're of no genealogical value, except in cases where these names are used by males. Refer to my series of articles on "Portuguese Naming Traditions" on this website.
